From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The aircraft departed rwy 22. A witness stated he saw an object fall from the aircraft when the aircraft was approximately 500 feet AGL. According to the witness, the aircraft then made a steep left turn and pitched down at 45 degrees. The witness stated that the aircraft then impacted the ground at the same 45 degree down pitch. The pilot reported to the state police that after take off, he felt a big vibration so he turned the engine off and went into a power glide. The state police retrieved the fallen object, which was the baggage compartment cover. The state police found the baggage compartment cover between the take off end of the rwy and the crash site. The passenger sustained fatal injuries and the pilot sustained serious injuries.
