From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 7/24/06, at approximately 12:30 local time, N9588B, a Cessna 180A, sustained substantial damage while landing on an unimproved dirt airstrip on the west side of cook inlet, approximately 27 nautical miles west of ninilchik, Alaska. The flight was conducted under 14 CFR part 135, on demand, and was operating in VFR conditions. The pilot stated while on approach for landing, with approximately 25 knots of headwind, he experienced a strong gust causing the aircraft's left wing tip to strike alder brush approximately 40 feet from the center of the airstrip. The left wing tip striking the alder brush caused the aircraft to yaw to the left. Immediately after the aircraft yawed to the left it touched down with the longitudinal axis perpendicular to the airstrip (sideways). The aircraft continued moving parallel to the strip causing excessive side loading on the landing gear resulting in the failure of the right gear box. The pilot stated the gust occurred so quickly he was unable to react in time to initiate a go around.

As the FAA filed it
