From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Inspectors statement from passengers interviews: aircraft landed at vermillion east 156; while loading their baggage both passengers recall smelling something burning, but paid little attention to it. Aircraft departed to intracoastal city (icy) upon arrival;one passenger of two departed the aircraft while the other passenger remained in the aircraft with the pilot during shutdown. As the two departed the aircraft after shutdown, they noticed flames and smoke coming from the baggage compartment. The baggage compartment was opened and while the pilot retrieved a fire extinguisher the passenger removed items from the compartment as to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished, however substantial damage had already been caused by the fire.
