From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft departed st. simons island, mckinnon airport, ga at 9:50 enroute to mt. Airy airport (mwk). While approaching mwk on a 3 mile final for runway 36 the engine became rough. Carburetor heat was pulled on and engine appeared to smooth out. After a few seconds the engine became rough again. Fuel tanks were switched right to left and engine ran normal. A grass strip was spotted. After 180 degree turn the engine became rough again and fuel tanks were swapped. Engine remained rough and tanks were switched again. The aircraft started a right turn to line up on the grass strip. It appeared that the aircraft was not going to make the grass strip so a suitable field was picked. The aircraft landed in the field at about 1:30 pm, 3:40 hours after departing st. simons island. The nose wheel sheared off during roll out and the nose gear folded back. The crew was uninjured and they exited the aircraft and proceeded to get help. The aircraft suffered nose gear damage, no firewall damage; propeller was bent, spinner damage, engine cowl damage, and fuselage damage at the left wing root at about the mid wing position. The fuel tanks were drained and 2.3 gallons remained in the right tankand 2.7 gallons in left tank.
