From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Delta state 6 (N94684) and delta state 5 (N94553), along with several other aircraft, were operating in the Monroe Regional Airport (mlu) runway 04 traffic pattern to practice takeoffs and landings for a scheduled competition. DS6 was #2 aircraft on a 1.0 mile final behind another ds aircraft (DS2) and DS5 was on a left downwind to follow DS6. Air traffic control (ATC) advised DS5 of DS6 traffic, DS5 reported the traffic in sight and ATC instructed DS5 to follow that traffic and cleared for the option. DS5 had mistakenly identified as the aircraft to follow and turned base and final to descend into the path of DS6. Contact was made between the DS6 propeller and the rear section of the DS5 aircraft causing substantial damage to the DS5 empennage. Both aircraft landed safely and were able to taxi to the ramp. ATC was unaware of the midair collision.

As the FAA filed it
