From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft was on an IFR flight, at 13,000 feet, and the pilot informed indianapolis center (ARTCC) that he was losing power and needed vectors to a nearby airport. Indianapolis ARTCC began vectoring N9165T to the beckley, WV airport. The pilot privacy data omitted, the PIC, reported that he didn't think that he would be able to make the beckley airport and requested something closer. Indianapolis ARTCC began vectoring N9165T to the Summersville, WV airport, and advised him that they had no weather report for that airport. On his last transmission to indianapolis ARTCC, the pilot privacy data omitted advised that he was unable to maintain altitude. The pilot privacy data omitted attempted an emergency landing in a field, approximately 5 miles west of the Summersville, WV airport, but overshot the field and struck several trees. A post impact fire developed that destroyed the aircraft. The aircraft engine was shipped to Continental motors for examination. An amendment to this report will state the findings.

As the FAA filed it

(-23) AIRCRAFT WAS ON AN IFR FLIGHT, AT 13,000 FEET, AND THE PILOT INFORMED INDIANAPOLIS CENTER (ARTCC) THAT HE WAS LOSING POWER AND NEEDED VECTORS TO A NEARBY AIRPORT. INDIANAPOLIS ARTCC BEGAN VECTORING N9165T TO THE BECKLEY, WV AIRPORT. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^, THE PIC, REPORTED THAT HE DIDN'T THINK THAT HE WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE THE BECKLEY AIRPORT AND REQUESTED SOMETHING CLOSER. INDIANAPOLIS ARTCC BEGAN VECTORING N9165T TO THE SUMMERSVILLE, WV AIRPORT, AND ADVISED HIM THAT THEY HAD NO WEATHER REPORT FOR THAT AIRPORT. ON HIS LAST TRANSMISSION TO INDIANAPOLIS ARTCC, THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ ADVISED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ ATTEMPTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A FIELD, APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES WEST OF THE SUMMERSVILLE, WV AIRPORT, BUT OVERSHOT THE FIELD AND STRUCK SEVERAL TREES. A POST IMPACT FIRE DEVELOPED THAT DESTROYED THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE WAS SHIPPED TO CONTINENTAL MOTORS FOR EXAMINATION. AN AMENDMENT TO THIS REPORT WILL STATE THE FINDINGS.
