From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The pilot of the CE-172M, N9005H, was performing local proficiency flying around the pattern at South Bend regional airport. After returning from flight, the pilot taxied and parked in front of a t-hangar in close proximity to where he normally stores his aircraft. The pilot stated that he set brakes in attempt to troubleshoot a problem with a portable GPS. He said he kept the aircraft power slightly above idle, lean mixture. He was looking down to determine the cause of the apparent GPS problem when the aircraft slowly proceeded forward and struck the hangar. The damage to the aircraft was minor, limited to propeller and spinner with potential for hidden damage to engine. The t-hangar had minor localized damage. There were no injuries reported. The pilot failed to pay attention to the control of the aircraft and take necessary precautions to safety while attempting to troubleshoot a problem. He stated he was unaware the aircraft was moving until he felt impact.
