What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) During cruising flight the aileron cable to the right aileron failed, causing the aileron controls to fail. The airplane began a shallow turn to the left which slowly increased in bank angle. The pilot applied up elevator in an attempt to arrest the descent that resulted from the turn. The up elevator caused the airplane to overbank in the direction of the turn, increasing both the turn rate and descent rate. The pilot and passenger both applied full up elevator, which ultimately caused the airplane to enter an accelerated stall and spin. The airplane spun into a stand of trees in a deep ravine in the woods causing fatal injuries to the pilot. The passenger survived and was able to provide an account of the crash. The right aileron cable slipped out of a swaged nicopress sleeve, resulting in a loss of aileron control continuity.
As the FAA filed it
(-23) DURING CRUISING FLIGHT THE AILERON CABLE TO THE RIGHT AILERON FAILED, CAUSING THE AILERON CONTROLS TO FAIL.
