From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot states that he was enroute to palo alto airport (kpao) from reid hillview airport (krhv) at an altitude of 1000 feet when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence wherein the aircraft engine immediately lost power and was unable to recover. The pilot observed a relatively safe landing area on a road and landed the aircraft without event. The Newark, California, police and fire departments responded to this event. Subsequently, the aircraft was defueled, the wings were removed, and the aircraft was transported on a flat bed truck to the palo alto airport. Post flight inspection of the aircraft regarding loss of engine power revealed that the left hand magneto condensor wires had shorted (pn M3064); and that the right hand magneto coil wedges (pn M3040) were liberated from the mounting presumably from the encountered turbulence in flight, thus causing the internal electrical coil to ground the magneto points. Photographs of the internal magneto parts support the contention of engine power loss. A malfunction/defect report will be filed.

As the FAA filed it
