From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot attempted a landing, with a crosswind and gusty conditions on runway 18 at Oelwein, IA (olz). This runway is 85 feet wide, with tall corn on both sides. When the aircraft touched down on the 1800 foot grass runway, the pilot said the wind picked up the right wing and full control correction was not sufficient for the existing winds. The aircraft was on the left main landing gear and left wing tip for approximately 500 feet, then the pilot lost all directional control, when the aircraft slowed down, weather vaned to the right, left the runway and came to rest in a corn field upside down. The weather at waterloo, IA (kalo) approximately one hour later was, METAR kalo 141654Z 340/12G16KT 10SM CLR29/12 A2983. Waterloo is 20NM to the southwest of Oelwein.
