From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) While on a VFR flight from peoria, Illinois to oshkosh, Wisconsin on 7/22/2007, the north American T-6, p&w 1340 engine, number 4 cylinder, connecting rod broke and the engine seized. The aircraft was at 2800 feet and to the northeast of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin on the warbird arrival procedure to oshkosh/eaa airventure. The pilot was unable to make Fond Du Lac airport and landed on highway 41. On rollout the right wing hit a wooden sign post causing substantial damage to the wing. No other damage to persons or property on the ground. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The aircraft was towed to the Fond Du Lac airport. Suspected cause of the connecting rod failure was a "hydraulic lock" which had occurred during engine start up sometime previous to this flight.
