From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 2/04/2008 at 15:40Z, uala flight 871 enroute from iad to sfo reported that the aircraft was diverting to mci due to smoke in the cabin. The smoke appeared to be an electrical odor and seemed to come from the seat 12D and 12E area. All cabin power was isolated along with the recirculation and galley fans. The crew declared an emergency, ARFF was on stand-by, and the aircraft landed without incident. Ual maintenance was unable to determine the source of the electrical odor. On February 5, 2008, uala sent two mechanics to mci to further troubleshoot and locate the source of the smoke. They inspected and operated the engines, APU and related fans. No smoke was noted. A verification flight was conducted from mci to ord. No smoke was noted and the aircraft was returned to service. Aircraft N677UA has no history of "smoke"/"fumes"/"fire" incidents or discrepancies. This incident will be entered into the uala cass program to determine the root-cause. Incident privacy data omitted is closed.
