From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft departed (5XS5) enroute to tyler airport to practice instrument approaches. Aircraft was 15 miles northwest of tyler at 2200 feet when the pilot attempted to switch from the right fuel tank to the left tnak. The fuel selector rotated approximately 80 degrees then seized in the center position causing fuel starvation to the engine. The pilot then turned the aircraft south into the wind and performed an emergency landing in a sparsely populated development. The aircraft landed successfully in a grass field and then veered left onto a street resulting in the left wing tip contacting a stone mailbox and the right aileron dragging along a ditch. There were no injuries or damage to property.
