What happened

(-23) The pilot noticed the edm 930 (primary eicas) went blank and the radios stopped working on N888CH, 10 minutes after take off from dhn runway 32 on an IFR flight. The engine continued to run properly. The pilot contacted cairns radar approach control using a handheld radio, was cleared to land at 12AL and landed without further incident. The director of maintenance (dom) over the mechanics troubleshooting N888CH stated that the acu had failed, preventing the alternator from charging the battery and powering the electrical system. The dom stated that from the aircraft's data logging capability, 36 seconds after starting the engine, the charging system went from charging to discharging. The dom stated that a broken wire to pin 4 of the acu was also found, which could have caused the low voltage light to test but not indicate a true low voltage condition. The dom stated that this wire may have been broken by the mechanics during troubleshooting. The edm 930 displays the status of the charging system in addition to the low voltage.

(-23) THE PILOT NOTICED THE EDM 930 (PRIMARY EICAS) WENT BLANK AND THE RADIOS STOPPED WORKING ON N888CH, 10 MINUTES AFTER TAKE OFF FROM DHN RUNWAY 32 ON AN IFR FLIGHT. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN PROPERLY. THE PILOT CONTACTED CAIRNS RADAR APPROACH CONTROL USING A HANDHELD RADIO, WAS CLEARED TO LAND AT 12AL AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE (DOM) OVER THE MECHANICS TROUBLESHOOTING N888CH STATED THAT THE ACU HAD FAILED, PREVENTING THE ALTERNATOR FROM CHARGING THE BATTERY AND POWERING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE DOM STATED THAT FROM THE AIRCRAFT'S DATA LOGGING CAPABILITY, 36 SECONDS AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, THE CHARGING SYSTEM WENT FROM CHARGING TO DISCHARGING. THE DOM STATED THAT A BROKEN WIRE TO PIN 4 OF THE ACU WAS ALSO FOUND, WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED THE LOW VOLTAGE LIGHT TO TEST BUT NOT INDICATE A TRUE LOW VOLTAGE CONDITION.
