(-23) On February 29, 2008, at approximately 1300 CST, while on approach to runway 34R at Midland International Airport (maf) west of Midland, Texas, the engine of N9533E, a Bellanca model 17-30A, began to lose power. The pilot stated the fuel tank selector was set to the left wing tank. He then selected the right tank and turned on the electrical boost pump and selected the prime setting several times, but was unable to get the engine to develop power. The pilot executed an emergency landing on a caliche oilfield road approximately 5 miles southeast of the airport. The aircraft touched down short of the road, clipping several mesquite trees/bushes. The aircraft sustained damage to the nose gear strut, left main gear strut, both wing leading edges, and damage to the fabric on the lower fuselage and wing flaps. The pilot and passenger were not injured.
