From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On July 19, 2008, about 1540 central daylight time, a single-engine Piper, PA-22, airplane, N9980D, was destroyed upon impact with terrain following a loss of control during the takeoff-climb from a private airfield near Kemp, Texas. The airplane was registered to and operated by a private individual. The pilot and two passengers received fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the 14 code of federal regulations part 91 flight. Two other aircraft along with the accident airplane gathered at the private airfield earlier that day. The other aircraft each departed 5-10 minutes before the accident airplane. A witness stated that she saw the airplane depart the airfield and then start the left turn. As the airplane continued the turn, the airplane lost altitude and the nose dropped. She added that there was no change in the sound of the airplane's engine. The airplane impacted the ground at a steep angle, in a vacant field near several residences. A post crash fire erupted and consumed the majority of the airplane. Following the on-site examination, the wreckage was recovered to air salvage of dallas, near lancaster, Texas.
