From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 08/03/2008, the subject aircraft being operated by the subject airman departed rwy 01 at N07 at approximately 1505 EDT. On climb-out, the right hand wing fuel cap departed the aicraft and struck a golfer at the sunset valley golf course, pequannock, NJ, on his right foot. The golfer only suffered a bruise and refused medical attention. The subject airman, who is also the aircraft owner, stated that, prior to the flight, he removed the right hand fuel cap and attempted to fuel the aircraft from the N07 self serve facility. When he attempted to use the fuel nozzle, he noted that it was locked an unavailable for use. He placed the fuel cap back in the fuel tank filler and prepared for depature. He stated that it would have been unusual for him not to secure the fuel cap locking tab, but subsequent events indicate that was the case. He noticed that the cap was missing on climb out. He returned and landed on rwy 01 at N07 without incident.

As the FAA filed it
