From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) As pilot started his approach to runway 26, he noticed a C172 on short final. The pilot of N1YZ decided to extend his downwind for separation. At this point the pilot (N1YZ) was informed, by radio, that he was trailing black smoke out of his engine. Full power was applied and a right base leg was initiated and the landing gear lowered. A large rate of decent was experienced and a lack of engine power was immediately noticed by the pilot. Aircraft turned to final and could not make the runway. The aircraft impacted short of the runway and went through soft sand and sage brush, shearing off the nose gear and both mains. The aircraft sustained substantial damage (mainly to left wing rear spar). The pilot was not injured. NTSB will conduct engine inspection to determine probable cause.
