From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft departed private lasardi air strip (4OR7) north of salem, OR, April 1, 2009, at approximately 0711 hours, for a direct flight to hillsboro, OR (hio) with 2 persons on board. Both occupants were certificated private pilots, single engine land, rated. It could not be determined who was acting PIC, but the aircraft was registered to occupant, privacy data omitted. The weather over the intended route was overcast with areas of low clouds, fog and rain. Weather over the chehalem mountain range was low clouds, fog and rain with gusty winds at the time of the accident. No flight plan was filed and it is expected that the flight received weather briefing via a handheld garmin 495 GPS unit, not recovered at the scene. The aircraft was in the low clouds over the east end of the chehalem mountain range and witnesses stated the aircraft engine was sputtering and backfiring as it was turning to the east seconds before the aircraft impacted the ground, killing both occupants.
