From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The aircraft was flying in the area of Colorado Springs,CO conducting an instructional flight. After a 45 minute flight Colorado Springs tower was called for a return landing. As the aircraft was returning the engine faltered and surged. The pilot thought he might have a fuel problem. The pilot elected to make an off airport precautionary landing rather that fly over a populated area. The landing occurred without incident. After landing the fuel gages were checked and indicated fuel in both tanks, 1/4 in the left, 1/8 in the right. The pilot added gas as a precautionary matter and the pilot did a run up. He was unable to duplicate the problem. He took off from the field and landed at Colorado Springs, CO.
