From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On October 7, 2009 at approximately 14:50 local time, student pilot privacy data omitted was practicing touch and go takeoff and landings at Montgomery Field (kmyf) in San Diego, CA. The weather was clear and the winds were out of 250 degrees at approximately 12 knots for runway 28R. On his second landing attempt yuu was blown north of the 28R centerline and as he touched down on the main landing gear, yuu applied heavy left rudder to correct back to the runway centerline. In doing so, the Cessna 172 swerved hard left and then yuu over corrected back to the right. At this point the airplane had crossed completely over the south edge of runway 28R, and in the process of correcting back to the right, the left main landing gear departed the south edge of runway 28R and struck the 40 inch by 40 inch, 100 pound distance remaining sign, which created a severe pivoting.

As the FAA filed it
