On 4-16-2010 at approximately 1815 local time, pilot-in-command ryan daniels departed from gillespie field (see) for a local pleasure flight. Daniels was flying a Cessna 182, N5318B. This aircraft is utilized the majority of the time for the purpose of banner towing in the san diego area. The only passenger aboard was his privacy data omitted, not a pilot. The flight time was approximately 50 minutes (not inclusive of engine start, taxi, and holding short waiting for takeoff clearance). The pilot daniels said as he was circling his privacy data omitted south of the airport he experienced engine failure and lost all power. He turned directly to runway 35 (about 5 miles north of his position) at see and landed short of the runway on privacy data omitted. There he tried to land in between power lines. He avoided one set and caught the second set which caused him to crash the privacy data omitted both pilot and passenger exited the plane safely and then the airplane caught fire. The details of the flight are as follows:* prior to departure daniels preflighted the C-182 and did not notice any discrepancies. He did note that the aircraft was not full of fuel, in fact noted that the left wing tank had approximately half a tank (13 gallons or less) and the right had approximately a quarter tank (8 gallons or less). These amounts were determined by daniels visually over the wing and the tanks were not measured using a fuel quantity dip-stick. Daniels said the fuel gauge indicators corresponded with his visual determination. Daniels started the engine, got ATIS, and recieved taxi clearance to rwy 27R.* at 27R, daniels did an engine run-up and said everything was normal. There he switched to tower frequency, and asked for a straight out departure. Daniels said that he held short of the runway 27R while one airplane landed and the other was cleared to takeoff prior to him. Daniels estimate of the time between engine start and actual takeoff was 5-6 minutes only.* daniels took off at approximately 1820 local time(his estimate) and went straight out from rwy 27R to transition kmyf airspace at 3000'MSL.* daniels then departed kmyf airspace and descended for la jolla area at 500' MSL, where he circled a couple of times.* daniels then flew south and contacted lindbergh tower for a transition south over their airspace. South of ksan airspace, he contacted north island tower for transition but was turned away. Daniels said he then went back towards ksan and again contacted them for a transition back to the north which was approved.* next, daniels left ksan airspace and flew back towards Mt. Soledad where he contacted kmyf tower and again asked to transition their airspace and climbed back up to 3000' MSL. After transition through kmyf he checked in again with ksee tower and told them he was going to circle south of the airport over Mt. Helix. That was approved and while he was orbiting the area of helix his engine failed while he was approximately 3000' MSL.* daniels said he quickly troubleshot and adjusted mixture, applied carb heat, checked the magnetos, and swithed the fuel selector from both to left then to right (the tank with the least amount of fuel in the first place). He said the throttle position did nothing and his propeller was basically windmilling.* daniels said he turned directly for ksee and asked to land on rwy 35. Daniels said he was definitely not going to make the privacy data omittedjohnson streetprivacy data omitted1047 johnson st.privacy data omittedHis brother^ exited the plane and the plane caught fire.
As the FAA filed it
ON 4-16-2010 AT APPROXIMATELY 1815 LOCAL TIME, PILOT-IN-COMMAND RYAN DANIELS DEPARTED FROM GILLESPIE FIELD (SEE) FOR A LOCAL PLEASURE FLIGHT. DANIELS WAS FLYING A CESSNA 182, N5318B. THIS AIRCRAFT IS UTILIZED THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME FOR THE PURPOSE OF BANNER TOWING IN THE SAN DIEGO AREA. THE ONLY PASSENGER ABOARD WAS HIS ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, NOT A PILOT. THE FLIGHT TIME WAS APPROXIMATELY 50 MINUTES (NOT INCLUSIVE OF ENGINE START, TAXI, AND HOLDING SHORT WAITING FOR TAKEOFF CLEARANCE). THE PILOT DANIELS SAID AS HE WAS CIRCLING HIS ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ SOUTH OF THE AIRPORT HE EXPERIENCED ENGINE FAILURE AND LOST ALL POWER. HE TURNED DIRECTLY TO RUNWAY 35 (ABOUT 5 MILES NORTH OF HIS POSITION) AT SEE AND LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY ON ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^. THERE HE TRIED TO LAND IN BETWEEN POWER LINES. HE AVOIDED ONE SET AND CAUGHT THE SECOND SET WHICH CAUSED HIM TO CRASH THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ BOTH PILOT AND PASSENGER EXITED THE PLANE SAFELY AND THEN THE AIRPLANE CAUGHT FIRE. DANIELS SAID HE WAS DEFINITELY NOT GOING TO MAKE THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^JOHNSON STREET^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^1047 JOHNSON ST.^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^HIS BROTHER^ EXITED THE PLANE AND THE PLANE CAUGHT FIRE.
