From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On April 21, 2010, at approximately 1830 CDT, the pilot of N9197F, an AT-802 agricultural aircraft, was maneuvering while dispensing herbicide pellets on a pasture. The pilot reported a couple of light colored puffs of smoke coming out of the exhaust while maneuvering. Shortly afterward, the pilot heard a loud report followed by a large puff of light smoke from the exhaust, then the engine spooled down and lost thrust. The pilot attempted to land to the north on hwy 118, 15 miles south of Alpine, Texas. Upon touchdown the aircraft departed the road and went through a barbed wire fence on the west side of the road. The aircraft struck a fence post and landed in the pasture. The left main gear struck a hole and sheared off. There was damage to both flaps, the right aileron, lower aft fuselage, and propeller. There were no injuries to the pilot.
