From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

An outboard engine of a delta air lines B-747-4 made contact with runway 16L at Narita International Airport (rjaa); minor damage was sustained to the engine cowl. On a visual approach approximately 5 miles in trail of a heavy Boeing 777 and carrying a 3 knot additive for fluctuating airspeed indications, the B-747-4 touched down on the right main gear for a right crosswind (230/14K variable 200 to 270, gusting 16-27K). The crew had selected flaps 30 and autobrakes 2. Before nose gear touchdown, the left wing rose abruptly; the pilot flying (pf), the captain and line check airmen, countered with aggressive left aileron/spoiler. The crew reported a normal ground roll and taxi to the gate; they were not aware damage had occurred. Post-flight inspection revealed a 51 by 16 inch scrap to the nr 4 lower cowl; subsequent maintenance procedures found no internal damage to the engine. The cowl was replaced and the aircraft returned to service. The pf accomplished 4 landings in the last 6 days; this frequency is well above average for B-747-4 operations at delta air lines. The flight data recorder was removed and the incident was reported to the jtsn (japanese version of the NTSB) and jcab (japanese version of the FAA). No damage was found to runway 16L.

As the FAA filed it
