From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot steven paul Nelson was on a pleasure flight with his father. He was performing a touch and go at Milaca MN (18Y) on runway 16, on initial climb out the engine sputtered and lost power, and quit operating. The pilot glided the aircraft down to a field beyond the end of the runway. He landed left wing heavy and the left main landing gear folded up, the aircraft bounced and touched down 45 feet from initial ground contact, then it skidded on left gear, with the right main tire rolling another 57 feet until it made a 90 turn to the left and came to rest on the nose, then dropped back down on the tailwheel. The pilot stated he forgot to change the fuel selector valve from left tank to both tanks, and ran the left tank dry. The pilot and passenger were uninjured, they were wearing shoulder harnesses.
