From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

First flight of aircraft after purchase and repaint. Aircraft sat on ground for several years prior. Conformity inspection complete pilot did high speed taxi and tested engine performance then taxied back and tookoff. During runup thick black smoke seen out of the exhuast area. At or just after rotation witnesses heard popping coming from engine. At rotation pilot rotated too high then overcorrected. Pilot flew in right hand pattern and tried to return to airport and never gained significant altitude. Pilot turned at mid field and went directly to airport in an attempt to make the airfield. Landing gear clipped perimeter fence causing aircraft to nose over into the ground. Engine separated from aircraft. Pilot and his seat ejected by the force of the crash and landed 40 from wreckage. Pilot severly injured.
