From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On oct. 1, 2010, citation 550 (N262Y) departed tampa international (tpa) at approximately 6:29AM. Aircraft arrived at Manteo, NC (mqi) at approximately 0830. Pilot in command (PIC) filed an IFR flight plan but did not select an alternate even though forecasted weather for mqi was IMC condition (less than 2,000 feet). PIC stated there was no maintenance discrepancies noted during preflight or during flight. Weather conditions at mqi, recorded by SIC just prior to approach (and confirmed by airport weather observaton system), was winds: 340 at 4 KTS., visibility: 2 and a half miles, light drizzle, ceiling: 1,100 feet broken, temperature: 21, dew point: 21, altimeter: 2962. PIC said he determined landing distances "off the top of his head" and elected to continue to mqi to land. Aircraft approached runway 23 from the northeast on the GPS 23 approach and landed on runway 23 (length 4,305 feet) with standing water while encountering a 2 knot tailwind and drizzle. 3 witnesses saw aircraft touch down on runway just west of taxiway delta with 2,175 foot remaining (performance chart lists approximately 3,089 to 3,515 feet needed for estimated aircraft weight of 11,200 lbs. Which was provided by PIC). Pilot applied full thrust reversers and brakes upon/during landing and noted that brakes were not holding for remainder of runway (hydroplaning). Aircraft slid down runway in a left crab angle, going off the end of runway, over a rocky berm and into croatan sound approximately 50 feet from shore. All 7 people evacuated the aircraft and were taken to the hospital for injuries. There were no fatalities.

As the FAA filed it
