From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On October 9, 2010 at 0815 MDT, N1527S, a Firefly 8B-15 lighter than air-free balloon (lta-fb) registered to robert schaible and N160US, a cameron doll-90 lta-fb, registered to the corn palace balloon club came into contact while in flight approximately 200 yards south of the Albuquerque balloon fiesta field (abff). The gondola of N160US tore the fabric of the envelope of N1527S from above the equator up to one of the turning vents, leaving a triangular opening of approximately 5 by 5 by 7 feet in the envelope. N1527S made an emergency landing in the small clearing of a wood lot approximately 500 yards south of the abff. The pilot of N1527S and his two passengers were uninjured. N160US was not damage by the contact and continued its flight to a normal landing farther down wind from the site of the impact. The pilot and the passenger in N160US were not injured. ***the following information relates to N160US, the #2 aircraft involved (from block 13), and lists, by block number, the data for N160US where that data is different than for the #1 aircraft (N1527S). ***data for N160US: block 11 = none; block 15B = experimental exhibition; block 20 = 1 uninjured flt crew and 1 uninjured passenger; block 26 = cruise; block 29 = 02/20/2010 & 04/18/2009 safety seminars - all other fields = no; block 31 note = the "second pilot" data in this report is for the PIC of the #2 aircraft (N160US) and is not for a second pilot on the #1 aircraft. ****block 41 travel = 10 minutes walk - I was at a waivered balloon event when this incident occurred 200 yards south of the field.
