From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 10-17-2010 at 0900 hours, the pilot attempted to depart Wells, NV. Airport with one passenger on board. The airport elevation is 5772 feet and the runway is 5498 feet long. The pilot stated he commenced his take off roll, the tail came off the ground and then he began to fly the aircraft. The pilot stated the aircraft started an uncommanded turn to the left and then proceeded to go off the left side of the runway. On 10-27-2010 the airport and aircraft were examined. Tire marks on the runway indicated the aircraft touched down at the approximate 1000 foot mark indicating contact with the ground at the center of the runway then veering off the left side of the runway and striking a runway edge marker light with the left elevator as the tail wheel traveled directly over the base of the marker light where the tire left a mark. The aircraft continued off the runway into the vegetation which consisted of sage brush. The aircraft continued through the sage brush for approximately 1500 feet passing over a dirt strip and dirt road. While in the sage brush the aircraft struck an old airport runway marking sign which had metal supports. The aircraft exited the sage brush and taxied to a parking area. Examination of the aircraft indicated the propeller had approximately 2 inches missing from one blade tip and approximately half an inch missing from the other blade tip. The landing gear had been pushed rearward and tires were angles outward with the right brake line broken at the brake caliper. The fuselage aft of the landing gear are had been deformed and aircraft door was not able to be shut. The tail showed bending damage to the movable surface of the rudder and impact damage to the left elevator.
