From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Asel trainin flight originating at Friday harbor airport on 1-09-2011 at 1245 hrs. CFI with student pilot who was in the left seat of the Piper PA-22 tripacer aircraft. Flight was prepatory for private pilot practical test and had flown for approx. 30 minutes then proceeded to Lopez Island Airport for pattern work. On the second takeoff from the Lopez airport at approximately 500 feet AGL the aircraft experienced a total loss of power. The CFI took conrol of the aircraft and initiated a turn of 135 degrees to the right planning on an emergency landing to an open grass field. Upon touchdown the aircraft traveled approximately 500 feet before coming to rest at a wire fence and small brush line. The nose gear broke and folded rearward during the last 100 feet of the landing roll. The left main gear broke shortly thereafter and the aircraft came to rest with a left wing tip just off the ground and the left window broken out. No propellor damage was noted which would support a total loss of engine power. No injuries were sustained by either crewmember. Pilots walked to a nearby house and called authorities.
