From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 4/20/2011, at approximately 1555 PDT, Piper PA-28-180 aircraft, N5163S, suffered a partial loss of power during climb out from Auburn Municipal Airport (S50). After completing a normal run-up and systems check, the aircraft departed S50 on runway 16 under VFR on a part 91 instrument training flight with two certificated private pilots on board. Upon reaching 1000' AGL on the downwind leg, the engine began running rough and would not develop sufficient power to maintain altitude. The pilot in command attempted to return to the airport and turned a close-in base leg for runway 16. However, he determined he was too high to perform a safe landing on the airport and he selected an open pasture west of the airport to avoid the congested areas surrounding the airport and successfully completed a forced landing. Niether occupant of the aircraft was injured. The aircraft incurred minor damage to the left wing tip strobe light and a small indentation to the center panel of the right wing leading edge.
