The pilot landed on a private Grass strip at privacy data omitted to eat lunch at Stanton's bbq who owns the Grass strip. The runway runs east and west in a large Grass field. There is a taxi way on the north side of the runway and a little more north Stanton road heads west. At the FAR east part of the Grass field is the aircraft parking area which is down a slight hill from the runway and taxiway. Across Stanton road from the parking area is Stanton's bbq restaurant. The runway is marked on both sides with white five gallon buckets about every one hundred feet. The first white buckets at the east end of the runway actually mark the left edge of the runway and the right edge of the taxiway as your looking west (up hill). As you are looking west from the parking area, you are looking up hill and can only see the first two white buckets that mark the left edge of the runway and the right edge of the taxiway. At the point of the first two white buckets which is actually at the crest of the hill, the runway and the taxiway are slightly going to the left. At about 2:00 pm the pilot attempted to takeoff going up hill while only being able to see the white buckets that mark the left side of the runway and the right side of the taxiway at the crest of the hill where the runway starts. The pilot stated that he had started his takeoff roll from midway up the hill, planning to have maximum available length of runway after cresting the hill. The pilot further stated his visibility was limited due to the upward slope and the tailwheel configuration of the aircraft, and that he failed to realize that the runway had a dogleg angle to the left at the top of the hill. The pilot stated that his forward speed was too fast to make the left turn to the runway. At this point the aircraft turned to the right, crossed a ditch that was about three feet across and about three feet deep, turned left onto the road, traveled down the road, leaving a 8 foot long skid mark on the road after about 55 yards of travel and came to a rest about 150 yards down the road. The aircraft came to a rest on a mostly south heading with the tail of the aircraft barely on the road pavement. The pilot started his takoff roll going up hill heading west, not being able to see the begining end of the runway that he was intending to use. At the crest of the hill the pilot lost directional control of the aircraft and departed the Grass field that the runway was on, crossed a ditch, traveled down a paved for approximately 150 yards down the road. The aircraft came to a rest on a mostly south heading with the tail wheel on the pavement of the road. The right wing was bent up at about a 30 degree angle just outboard of the fuel tank. The left flat spring strut was bent foward with the axle bent forward. The bottom of the rudder was damaged. There were two souls on board, with no injuries.
As the FAA filed it
THE PILOT LANDED ON A PRIVATE GRASS STRIP AT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ TO EAT LUNCH AT STANTON'S BBQ WHO OWNS THE GRASS STRIP. ACROSS STANTON ROAD FROM THE PARKING AREA IS STANTON'S BBQ RESTAURANT.THE RUNWAY IS MARKED ON BOTH SIDES WITH WHITE FIVE GALLON BUCKETS ABOUT EVERY ONE HUNDRED FEET. AT THE POINT OF THE FIRST TWO WHITE BUCKETS WHICH IS ACTUALLY AT THE CREST OF THE HILL, THE RUNWAY AND THE TAXIWAY ARE SLIGHTLY GOING TO THE LEFT.AT ABOUT 2:00 PM THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO TAKEOFF GOING UP HILL WHILE ONLY BEING ABLE TO SEE THE WHITE BUCKETS THAT MARK THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TAXIWAY AT THE CREST OF THE HILL WHERE THE RUNWAY STARTS. THE PILOT STATED THAT HIS FORWARD SPEED WAS TOO FAST TO MAKE THE LEFT TURN TO THE RUNWAY.AT THIS POINT THE AIRCRAFT TURNED TO THE RIGHT, CROSSED A DITCH THAT WAS ABOUT THREE FEET ACROSS AND ABOUT THREE FEET DEEP, TURNED LEFT ONTO THE ROAD, TRAVELED DOWN THE ROAD, LEAVING A 8 FOOT LONG SKID MARK ON THE ROAD AFTER ABOUT 55 YARDS OF TRAVEL AND CAME TO A REST ABOUT 150 YARDS DOWN THE ROAD. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A REST ON A MOSTLY SOUTH HEADING WITH THE TAIL OF THE AIRCRAFT BARELY ON THE ROAD PAVEMENT.THE PILOT STARTED HIS TAKOFF ROLL GOING UP HILL HEADING WEST, NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE BEGINING END OF THE RUNWAY THAT HE WAS INTENDING TO USE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A REST ON A MOSTLY SOUTH HEADING WITH THE TAIL WHEEL ON THE PAVEMENT OF THE ROAD.THE RIGHT WING WAS BENT UP AT ABOUT A 30 DEGREE ANGLE JUST OUTBOARD OF THE FUEL TANK. THE LEFT FLAT SPRING STRUT WAS BENT FOWARD WITH THE AXLE BENT FORWARD. THE BOTTOM OF THE RUDDER WAS DAMAGED. THERE WERE TWO SOULS ON BOARD, WITH NO INJURIES.
