The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Aircraft left with 4 passengers from the Manteo terminal for a 30 min air tour around the outer banks. Departure was between 1345 and 1400 EDT. The aircraft taxied to runway 35. A waco depart normally prior to N9572C takeoff. Upon accelerating down the runway the aircraft became airborne prematurely in a gust, catching the pilot off guard, it rose a few feet into the air and then descended in the shear, with a hard bounce, becoming airborne once again. The aircraft was committed, as the croatan sound is immediately at the end of the threshold. Climb out was normal and all gages were in the green. There were no warning lights or horn, but raising the gear did not extinguish the gear in transit light. Ground personnel confirmed that the right gear seemed to be stuck in the down position. The gear was placed down with 3 green lights. (They remained lit until landing) the aircraft flew for 40 or more minutes to burn up fuel. The aircraft returned to Manteo airport and the pilot asked airport personnel to proceed to the runway for a low flyby to observe the right gear. Two low speed passes down runway 23 to confirm the gear appeared unstable and wobbling. The pilot did a few more circles over the sound to burn off the last of the fuel and prepare the passengers. The approach and flare were normal for gusty conditions and the aircraft touched down on left main and nose gear at minimum safe airspeed on the FAR right side of the runway 35, as close to the grass as practical. The aircraft remained controllable until the right gear touched down and the aircraft veered off the runway into the grassy area. The aircraft continued to skid across the grassy area and entered runway 23 where it came to rest. The passengers exited immediately and walked away from the aircraft. There was no smoke or fire. There was damage to the right flap and the rotating prop struck in the grassy area, putting 2" bends on all three-blade tips. The pilot exited the aircraft after securing everything. The right gear had folded back against the right flap upon touchdown and cushioned the right wing throughout the skid to runway 23. The nose gear axel is bent at about a 20-degree angle. The right main sheared off just below the upper housing. The right flap has skin damage. The right wing rear spar has minor damage. The right side fuselage has minor damage.
As the FAA filed it
AIRCRAFT LEFT WITH 4 PASSENGERS FROM THE MANTEO TERMINAL FOR A 30 MIN AIR TOUR AROUND THE OUTER BANKS.
