On August 18, 2011 at 12:30 LCL this inspector was requested to respond to an accident reported in Whitesburg ga. The roc was contacted and patched into privacy data omitted of carroll county. privacy data omitted Gave the location and initial information. The NTSB was contacted through the roc and privacy data omitted was dispatched to the scene. At 13:45 inspectors from the FSDO arrived and began the initial assessment. Interviews were conducted with several witnesses to the accident and according to the witness statements the PIC, privacy data omitted was executing a go around at Lyons Landing Airport (5GA2) and was not able to climb and struck tree tops at the end of runway 270 while attempting to maneuver through the smaller trees. The aircraft left wing contacted a tree top and dented the left wing leading edge approximately 12 inches in from the tip. The direction of flight at this time was approximately 255 degrees (15 degrees from the 270 runway heading). After contact with the trees the aircraft descended at approximately 30 degrees down and travelled 109 feet and contacted flower stands at a grave site then 32 feet and the left main contacted the ground next was the right main and nose then 17 feet into a grave site elevated 3 feet and surrounded by brick. The aircraft travelled 158 feet from the tree contact to the grave site. It appears that the nose down attitude may have popped the nose high enough for the spinner to slide over the top of the bricks before the prop hit the bricks and separated from the engine at the flange. While the nose was passing into the bricks the left main gear separated and the wheel and lower strut ended up on consolation church road in the center, along with the center windshield. The right main contacted the grave site and enough force and inertia was present to begin the fracturing of the right wing root along with the right wing being torn while passing over a head stone. The aircraft came to rest in a culvert next to the road approximately 15 feet from the impact grave site. Due to the fracture of the right wing, the fuel tank was compromised and the aircraft was engulfed by fire. The PIC privacy data omitted managed to get out of the aircraft and was on fire. A worker nearby privacy data omitted managed to extinguish the fire from the PIC and stayed with him until first responders arrived. The PIC was transported to grady with burns over 60 percent of his body. An interview with the PIC will be done at a later date. The elevation at the scene according to google earth is 1114 feet. The topographic map for Lyons Landing indicates at the end of runway 270 an elevation of 1104 feet. The weather at the time of the accident (10:40 am) was VFR with very little wind. The typical approach to Lyons Landing is from the east using runway 270. All departures are to the east on runway 09. The elevation according to the topographic map is 1050 at the end of 09. The runway is approximately 3000 feet in length with a grass surface. The practice at Lyons Landing is to depart to the east due to the rise in terrain to the west. The witness statements all indicate the attempt to go around of N281G and that the flaps appeared to remain down this may have contributed to the lack of adequate climb performance to avoid the rising terrain and trees at the end of runway 27.
As the FAA filed it
ON AUGUST 18, 2011 AT 12:30 LCL THIS INSPECTOR WAS REQUESTED TO RESPOND TO AN ACCIDENT REPORTED IN WHITESBURG GA. THE ROC WAS CONTACTED AND PATCHED INTO ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OF CARROLL COUNTY. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ GAVE THE LOCATION AND INITIAL INFORMATION. THE NTSB WAS CONTACTED THROUGH THE ROC AND ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS DISPATCHED TO THE SCENE. AT 13:45 INSPECTORS FROM THE FSDO ARRIVED AND BEGAN THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT. INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED WITH SEVERAL WITNESSES TO THE ACCIDENT AND ACCORDING TO THE WITNESS STATEMENTS THE PIC, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS EXECUTING A GO AROUND AT LYONS LANDING AIRPORT (5GA2) AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CLIMB AND STRUCK TREE TOPS AT THE END OF RUNWAY 270 WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MANEUVER THROUGH THE SMALLER TREES. THE PIC ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ MANAGED TO GET OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT AND WAS ON FIRE. A WORKER NEARBY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ MANAGED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE FROM THE PIC AND STAYED WITH HIM UNTIL FIRST RESPONDERS ARRIVED.
