From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot was hovering over power lines at night searching for a landing area / parking lot with the intent to land. It appears that the down-wash from the main rotor blades caused the power lines to make contact with each other creating a short circuit with a subsequent power failure. An FAA aircraft inspection at the pilots home base confirmed no damage to the helicopter. There was no indication of the heli-copter making contact with the power -lines and the pilot has stated that he never saw the lines until after he saw that the lights were out on an adjacent football field and simultaneously noticed sparks coming out of what appeared to be a transformer.

As the FAA filed it

PILOT WAS HOVERING OVER POWER LINES AT NIGHT SEARCHING FOR A LANDING AREA / PARKING LOT WITH THE INTENT TO LAND.IT APPEARS THAT THE DOWN-WASH FROM THE MAIN ROTOR BLADES CAUSED THE POWER LINES TO MAKE CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER CREATING A SHORT CIRCUIT WITH A SUBSEQUENT POWER FAILURE. AN FAA AIRCRAFT INSPECTION AT THE PILOTS HOME BASE CONFIRMED NO DAMAGE TO THE HELICOPTER.THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF THE HELI-COPTER MAKING CONTACT WITH THE POWER -LINES AND THE PILOT HAS STATED THAT HE NEVER SAW THE LINES UNTIL AFTER HE SAW THAT THE LIGHTS WERE OUT ON AN ADJACENT FOOTBALL FIELD AND SIMULTANEOUSLY NOTICED SPARKS COMING OUT OF WHAT APPEARED TO BE A TRANSFORMER.
