From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

After the aircraft failed to start, the pilot exited the aircraft and attempted to reposition the propeller by hand in order to manually engage the starter drive gear to the prop ring gear. During the repositioning of the prop, the engine started. The pilot stated the ignition key was selected to one magneto instead of being in the full off position. The throttle and mixture were in the full forward postion, and the parking brake not set. After the engine started, the pilot dived out of the way of the run-a-way aircraft. The aircraft impacted a steel hangar. The result of this impact sheared both of the wings off the fuselage. The aircraft continued into the hangar where it contatcted a restored stearman aircraft. The stearman incurred damage to two wings and the engine.
