From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On a local discovery flight the engine started to surge while the aircraft was on approach to the airport. 20 seconds later the engine quit. Pilot attempted a restart and it ran for 10 seconds then surged and quit. The flight departed at 1430 local time and the engine trouble started at 1500 local time. Pilot made an uneventful landing in the grass-covered portion of the municipal landfill. Attempts to restart the engine at the landing site on the following day were unsuccessful. The engine would crank but not fire. Subsequent investigation after retrieval revealed no defects in the engine ignition or fuel systems. A satisfactory start and ground run was accomplished using the aircraft's existing fuel. As of 12/09/2011 further analysis of the aircraft fuel system is required. This report will be amended.
