What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On 12/8/2011, N7138K (rans S-12 experimental aircraft) crashed near Festus memorial airport (fes) in Festus, MO. There were two occupants of the aircraft, a student pilot and flight instructor, with no injuries to either occupant. The intended flight was to make approximately two take-offs and landings. However, the student pilot completed three go-arounds, due to his approach being too high in altitude for a landing. During the third go-around, the student pilot added full power and attempted a steep left turn of approximately seventy (70) degrees. The CFI instructed the student pilot to turn back level. The student pilot then responded with a steep turn to the right. The CFI then took the controls, but the aircraft was entering a stall/spin. The tail of the aircraft dropped and the aircraft went down backwards into a wooded area. The aircraft slid down three (3) trees and came to rest approximately five (5) feet from the ground, suspended in the trees. Both the student and the CFI exited the aircraft unharmed. Three inspectors from the stl FSDO investigated the accident on 12/12/2011. The aircraft was still suspended in the trees. There was no evidence that the aircraft experienced any maintenance problems.
