The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
One August 18, 2012 at approximately 2100 z (1700 local), the landing gear of N343SF failed on touchdown, causing the aircraft to slide to a stop and flip over while landing north at Bayport aerodrome. The pilot was landing on runway 36 (turf runway 2740X150 feet). Pilot stated that he was slipping the airplane to loose altitude, came out of the slip and flared for landing. He expected the aircraft to float in ground effect. The aircraft impacted the runway 200 feet from threshold leaving three divots in the turf. The divots from the main wheels were 1.5 to 2 inches deep. The pilot stated that the aircraft "hit hard". The main landing gear partially failed and the aircraft drifted to the right. According to the pilot, the aircraft slowly sank down to the nose, and the engine/prop/spinner dug into the turf. The aircraft rolled over causing additional damage to the top wing and rudder. The aircraft came to rest 295 feet past the point of impact. Pilot stated they departed with full fuel, 32 gallons, and estimated approximately 24-26 gallons onboard. Aircraft has listed empty weight of 1204, and a gross weight of 1878 pounds. Full oil is an additional 22 pounds. The pilot's weight on his medical is 196, and the passenger is 193 pounds. Aircraft was approximately 1770 pounds on impact, and under maximum gross weight for all operations. Weather reported at islip airport, five miles north was: FEW037 SCT050 SCT085 26/16 VIS10 and the wind 340 at 05 knots. Pilot stated wind at the airport was 5 knots or less from a westerly direction. Pilot and passenger stated that they were unhurt. Aircraft damage: landing gear and fuselage fittings, propeller and spinner, engine (sudden stoppage), top wing including a broken spar, rudder.
