What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
The flight originated at khgr (frederick, MD) at 0800 and ended at 5B6 (Falmouth airpark, MA) on 7-21-2012. Flight time was approximately 3 hours. The aircraft fuel was 72 gallons on take off and approximately 36 gallons upon landing. The pilot did not report any problems with fuel or any other mechanical problems. There was one passenger. Approach was to runway 07, but the pilot felt that the he was to fast for the runway (runway length is 2298 feet). The wind was around 4 knots with a direction of runway 07. A go around was initiated, and on the second approach to runway 07, the pilot stated that his rate of decent was 3:1 in an effort to clear trees and land short, as to provide enough roll out for the short runway. Upon contact with the runway, the aircraft bounced once. The landing gear and tires were compressed enough to allow the main gear doors (lower edges) and the propeller to make contact with the runway's surface. The lower main gear doors showed signs of deformation on the lower edges. The propeller tips showed signs of contact with the runway and were deformed rearward approximately 6 inches from the tip. The pilot stated that he had practiced short field landings prior to landing at 5B6 and felt comfortable with landing on a shorter runway. Kfdk, where the practice landings took place, is 4000 feet in length. He stated also, that he previously had landings at 5B6 a several times in the past three years. The pilot stated he caused his sink rate to get to high due to the trees preceeding runway 07. The trees were determined to be approximately 330 feet from the beggining of runway 07.
