From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

CFI was completing a dual cross country flight after a stop in brownwood for lunch before returned to Abilene, Texas (abi). Engine lost power, in cruise flight 2 miles east of abi because of fuel exhaustion. The engine faltered and started sputtering and surging. The instructor took the controls and started a descent to a wheat field. The engine continued to surge and sputter during the descent and the rotor RPM was being dragged down by the engine. The CFI never fully entered an autorotation to recover the rotor RPM. During a hard landing with low rotor RPM, the rotor blades hit the tail boom almost severing the tail rotor.
