Description:
N12XW departed the Cable Airport (ccb) on a personal/business VFR flight to flight test an experminental battery operated ultralight. The aircraft is manufactured be yuneec and the model is called espider. The aircraft was piloted by an ATP rated pilot. The flight departed rwy 6 at Cable and was intending to fly north of the Cable Airport for phase 1 of the special flight limitations. The aircraft climbed to approximately 2,000 ft MSL (500 to 600 AGL) north of the Cable Airport when the pilot heard a popping sound , like a circuit breark tripping. The engine then stopped and the pilot made an emergency landing on baseline road just east of benson avenue. The traffic stopped behind the aircraft and the pilot landed without engine power without incident.
Casual factors:
The investigation revealed the aircraft had a mosfet power transistor that failed and caused the engine control unit to shut down, killing power to the engine
Recommendations for corrective action:
The aircraft should have a redundant system to allow the aircraft to maintain engine power in the event that the engine control unit has a transistor failure.
As the FAA filed it
