On March 9, 2013 aircraft Maule 5-210C s/n 6205C, registration number N17PR, requested a downwind departure from renton municipal airport control tower, (rnt) at 14:20 PST(local time).
At 14:31 PST rnt tower gave N17PR a clearance for takeoff.
At 14:35 PST was observed by rnt tower leave their airspace to the north.
Aircraft flew north a few miles and was in a circle turn when the engine stopped. At approximately 14:45 PST a call was placed to 911 of the aircraft impacting a house in woodenville, Washington.
At approximately 17:00 PST FAA arrived on-scene. Aircraft N17PR was found on its left side down in center door way of a three car garage. Left wing was found sheared off and approximately 15 feet west of impact after aircraft impacted a minivan in the driveway. ELT had been turned off by first responders. Aircraft appeared to impact minivan at about a 80 degree left wing low angle, hitting the minivan just outboard of the left wing root, removing the left wing, which ended up three feet west of the minivan. The aircraft continued off the minivan, contacted a basketball hoop/stand, dragging the base of the stand into the garage with the aircraft into the middle door of the garage. The aircraft came to rest on its left side with all tail , wheels and right wing, still attached to aircraft. All control surfaces were found at the scene.
No fuel was found in or around the minivan, or left wing which was on grass west of minivan. First responders reported fuel in the garage and under the main part of aircraft. First responders placed several blotters down to soak up the fuel around the aircraft. Some small amount of fuel was found dripping out of right wing main tank.
First responders had removed the passenger from the aircraft and airlifted him from the scene before FAA had arrived. Pilot who was fatal on impact was removed from the aircraft when FAA and NTSB arrived at scene. Both pilot and passenger were still in full shoulder and lap restrains.
The propeller was noted at the scene to not be producing any power at the time of impact. The engine at the scene appeared to be complete. All engine controls were in the full forward position. Ignition switch, with key intact was found in the ?both? Position. Power (master) and alternator switch were in the on position. Fuel selection lever was found in the ?left? Position. The fuel selector switch is a left -both- right selector valve.
When aircraft was removed from the scene, there was a little fuel removed from right main tank, and about 4 gallons removed from the right aux tank. No fuel was found in left wing.
Aircraft was removed and moved to hanger for further tear down.
