What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On approach (without flaps selected) to runway 34 aircraft impacted surface approximately 165 feet prior to runway. Aircraft bounced and then impacted at a second point directly on the left edge of the runway pavement, approximately 5-10 feet from the runway approach end. The right main gear struck the pavement edge, which initiated a clockwise rotation of the aircraft.
The aircraft immediately rotated approximately 170 degrees with a right wing down configuration. During the rotation at the 170 degree point, the left main gear sheared off and traveled to the right of the runway. During the rotation of the aircraft, the right main gear seared off and traveled to a point on the left side of the runway. The right main gear strut was found (to the right side of the runway) in the direction of the debris pattern flow created from second impact point. At the completion of the rotation to the 170 degree point, the aircraft traveled tail first as indicated on the asphalt surface as right main gear strut (being intact) also left well defined scrap marks. Tail first travel was indicated by surface scrap marks from the underside of the fuselage (directly under and to the rear of aft seating station). Further tail first travel was evident from the nose wheel tire (remaining intact after impact) leaving well defined scrape markings on the surface from the canted nose wheel. Various wheel scissors assembly parts were found along the direction of travel (on the runway).
At the final resting point with the left wing canted down (no left main gear remaining), the aircraft was basically intact. The propeller indicated no leading edge or tip damage. There were several impact points on several of the blades from various FOD. This damage was located at the approximately the same locations on each blade. Right main wing showed substantial structural damage as the wing was canted aft approximately 2-3 degrees aft. This was evident by separation of the wing/fuselage attach point at the right wing root leading edge. The right and left main wing spar was protruding (at several points) from the upper wing surface. The right under wing surface (forward of the gear well) also indicated major internal damage from structure materials protruding through the surface. Left wing (upper side) skin was indented approximately one foot (forward of the aileron) from the wing tip. Under fuselage (directly under the rear seat locations) was not clearly visible as the aircraft was sitting on the ground, however damage was clearly indicated from the surface travel. No fire damage was indicated.
Internal cockpit indication were as follows: gear was selected down; zero flaps were selected and indicating zero; engine condition lever was selected to the rear (off); propeller selector was in aft position; power lever was aft (off); elevator trim indicated normal range; circuit breakers were all in; rudders were positioned to the left; fuel selector was on; power was off with the battery switch in the off position.
As the FAA filed it
ON APPROACH (WITHOUT FLAPS SELECTED) TO RUNWAY 34 AIRCRAFT IMPACTED SURFACE APPROXIMATELY 165 FEET PRIOR TO RUNWAY.
