From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Engine lost power shortly after takeoff and aircraft made emergency landing about 3 miles north of the Spearfish, SD airport on 4-4-13. Pilot and passenger received minor injuires and aircraft received substantial damage. Inspector dwa went to the scene on 4-4 and inspectors dwa and jbh inspected the aircraft on 4-5 after it had been moved to a hangar in Spearfish, SD.

On the landing roll, the aircraft flipped onto its back and the occupants were able to exit the aircraft and walk to a farmhouse before an employee at the Spearfish airport arrived and took the pilot to the hospital with head cuts and a shoulder injury.

The aircraft had a lot of dirt and oil in the cowl, possibly because of oil leaking when the engine was upside down and the aircraft skidded some distance before coming to a stop. The inspectors noticed that the coil wire from the coil block was off, but couldn't determine if it was from the accident or occurred before.

The private pilot and his passenger, a commercial pilot and flight instructor stated the the engine just quit and switching to aux coil, aux fuel pump, and adjusting mixture had no affect on the engine and it windmilled to a stop.

As the FAA filed it
