What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On 06/01/13 at Winchester airport (kokv) at approximately 1308 UTC a Diamond DA-40, registered as N309DS was on a departure roll from runway 32. Shortly after the takeoff roll began, the aircraft began to veer off of the left hand side of the runway, struck a runway light and came to rest in the grass to the left of the runway.
There were no injuries reported and the damage to the aircraft was limited to the nose gear fairing, propeller damage and approximately a 2 inch gouge in the left wing above the stall warning gate.
The flight was conducted under 14 CFR part 91 for instruction of a part 61 flight student. The student's name is privacy data omitted. He is a pre-solo student and does not possess a student pilot or medical certificate.
The flight student was controlling the aircraft from the left seat while the instructor was following the controls from the right seat. According to the instructor, there was a slight hesitation during the take off roll that slightly pushed the instructor forward into the seat belt. Assuming the student had inadvertently hit the brakes, the instructor told the student to put his heels on the floor and she saw him comply. Approximately two seconds later the aircraft began to veer to the left.
The flight instructor intervened but was unable to regain the runway centerline and unable to stop the aircraft prior to departing the runway to the left.
