From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Description: pilot of N7XV executed an off airport landing on the Upper Endicott river, near lynn canal in northern southeast Alaska. During the landing, he touched down approximately 10-15 feet short of his intended landing point. This resulted in the right main landing gear colliding with a stump, and then collapsing. The aircraft received minor damage and there were no injuries to the pilot or his passenger.

Causal or contributing factors: pilot hit a small unknown stump during the off airport landing.

Recommendations: the pilot was counseled on conducting a more thorough reconnaissance of the landing area prior to final approach.

Comments: the pilot has thousands of hours in tail-wheel equipped aircraft and is an accomplished off-airport operations pilot. The pilot has no prior accidents or incidents and was cooperative with the investigation. He provided constructive self-criticism. The pilot has a compliant attitude.

Corrective action: counseling on thorough reconnaissance of off-airport landing sites.
