What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
N674RJ had been in cvg for several days with ice and snow built up. They were deiced and departed cvg. After take off there was smoke and smell in cabin, crew elected to return and landed on same runway in the opposite direction of take off. After landing CFR reportedly told the crew there was smoke coming from the aft of the airplane and they should evacuate. That smoke turned out to be steam from the APU exhaust.
Findings were significant amounts of glycol in engine cowls. Everything was cleaned and engines ran for hours to assure there was no other source of the smoke/smell.
