AWOS weather report for cvx reported at 0655 local, wind 340 degrees at 16 knots gusting to 27 knots, visibility 1 3/4 miles with light snow, scattered clouds at 1,800, broken clouds at 2,500 feet, overcast clouds at 2,900 feet, temperature minus 12 degrees celsius, dew point minus 16 degrees celsius, and altimeter 29.75 inches of mercury. NTSB authorized aircraft move to hangar at the Boyne City airport. January 9, 2014, traveled to accident site, photographed approach to impact point, damage to trees indicates aircraft approached impact point one wing very low, the angle from the impact with the trees to the ground impact sight is approximate 45 degree angle. Traveled to hangar, began assessment of aircraft accident damage, sorted wreckage by major component. Propeller; hartzell model, PHC-J3YF-1RF, s/n FP5205B; all blades exhibit damage, marked blades as a,b, and c for identification purposes in photographs. Blade a, exhibits high energy impact, blade curled back against itself. Blade b, has torsional impact damage, and blade c, has impact damage but does not indicate higher energy as does a, and b. crankshaft mounting flange found still attached to propeller hub. Note: propeller installed via STC on 6-29-2006 at ttaf 549.2 hours. Engine; teledyne Continental, model number IO-550-G, serial number 684928. Evidence does not indicate pre-impact fire in engine area. Propeller governor and induction tubes for cylinders 4 and 6 not found in the wreckage moved to the hangar, all other engine components required during engine operation found on the engine or in the wreckage at the hangar.

Lt and rt magneto equipped with impulse couplings, rotated mags, spark present at ignition lead ends. Spark plugs evaluated, no major discrepancies, engine driven fuel pump when turned by hand turned freely. Pump was disassembled, fuel present in the pump, vanes intact, no scoring found on pump walls. Fuel manifold distributor disassembled no fuel present, but fuel line fittings broken off from distributor. Cylinders 1, 3, and 5 removed, no discrepancies noted inside cyl. Pistons removed from cylinders 3 and 5 connecting rods, no discrepancies noted with pistons. Unable to turn crankshaft, and position cylinder 1 piston pin clear of crankcase. Cylinder 6 forced into cylinder 4, cylinder 6 base mounting studs broken off, except for upper and lower most rearward points. Suspect binding of connecting rod on crankshaft, and piston in cylinder 6 preventing the turning of the crankshaft. Crankshaft and camshaft examined through cylinder port 3 and 5, no indications of a broken crankshaft or camshaft. No evidence of oil starvation, or overheating. Forward section of fuselage destroyed by impact damage and fire. The aft fuselage is largely intact, but severely damaged. Unable to perform any flight control continuity. Rudder and elevator still attached to the stabs. Examined push pull tubes to elevator and rudder, connections in the rear of the fuselage intact. Forward sections of these tubes were sheared off. Nose gear in up position. Right main gear found in up position in wing and fuselage center section. Examined landing gear actuator motor, three and half inches of screw assembly exposed outside of receiver housing. Mooney technical support indicated that gear was in the ½ to ¾ extended position, not down and locked. Unable to locate gear position selector switch. ELT located in tail, activated light on. ELT is an AK450 that transmits on 121.5 / 243 frequencies. Right wing separated from wing center section, wing is largely intact. Flap assembly torn off from wing. Aileron still attached to wing. Right wing burned in area of fuel tank. Left wing, destroyed during impact.
