From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft N838UA / flight 695 was departing gate C12 lga main terminal. Aircraft was pushed off gate, and ground crew had difficulty disconnecting the tow bar from the nose landing gear attachment. They pulled aircraft forward to reposition and disconnect the tow bar. While pulling forward the tow bar disconnected from nose attachment. The airplane proceeded to go forward and struck the tow bar and airplane nose area. Airplane sustained damaged to nose wheel, nose doors and lower nose fuselage area.

No injuries to ground crew, flight crew or passengers. Passengers had to be off loaded at that spot on the ramp via air stairs and deplane through the left rear door of the plane. Aircraft could not be moved due to aircraft sustaining damage to nose wheels and forward lower nose of fuselage.

Maintenance report:

During push back at lga, the tractor tow bar failed and the aircraft sustained impact damage from the tow bar and tow tractor. The damage reported included to the nose langing gear (NLG), NLG doors, forward avionics compartment access doors, and forward fuselage skin section identified in the srm 53-11-11, fig 103 as item 1D. Damage included gouges and a punture.

Both nose wheels were replaced.

Also, aircraft had sheet metal repair as per united engineering change/repair authorization # 5311-01676 for ferry flight to ewr where permanent repairs could be made.
